How long to keep a pouch in: 20–60 minutes
A nicotine pouch releases most of its nicotine in the first 15–20 minutes and keeps giving flavour and a slower trickle for up to an hour. After that it is a damp bag of fibre. Most users settle on 30–45 minutes; brands typically say “up to 60 minutes”. Keeping a pouch in for hours does not give you more — it just irritates the gum, which is the main cause of the white patches long-term users get. Take it out, bin it, and if you want more later, take a fresh one.
How long the effect lasts: 1–3 hours
Nicotine has a half-life of roughly two hours in the body. From a 6 mg pouch the noticeable effect — alertness, the craving gone — lasts one to two hours after you remove it; from a 10 mg+ pouch, closer to three. That is why the typical pattern is a pouch every two to three hours while awake, or six to ten a day. If you find yourself wanting one every hour, the strength is too low rather than the pouch too short; see the strength guide.
How long a can lasts: shelf life and best-before
Sealed, a can of nicotine pouches is good for about a year from manufacture; the best-before date is printed on the base or the side label. Nicotine does not go off, but the pouches dry out and the flavour fades, so an old can feels weaker and tastes of less. Once opened, use the can within two to four weeks for best flavour; a dried-out pouch still delivers nicotine but releases it more slowly.
Store cans somewhere cool and dry — a drawer, not a car dashboard or a windowsill. Refrigeration is optional and slows drying; freezing is unnecessary. Keep every can out of reach of children and pets: a single strong pouch is a dangerous dose for a small child.
Short-dated pouches: cheaper, and fine to buy
Stores clear cans approaching their best-before date at steep discounts — often €1 instead of €4–5. These are perfectly usable if you will get through them within a few weeks; the only downside is slightly drier pouches and softer flavour. We list them separately on the Best price page under “Short-date clearance” so they never get mixed into the regular price comparison.
How many pouches a day
There is no safe number, only a typical one: regular users have between three and ten pouches a day, roughly matching the cigarettes they replaced. A can of 20 therefore lasts two to six days. If you are counting, price per pouch (price per can ÷ pouches per can) is the number to watch — a 24-pouch can at the same price as a 20-pouch can is 17 % cheaper per pouch, and every product page shows it.
Frequently asked questions
How long should you keep a nicotine pouch in?
20–60 minutes. Most of the nicotine is released in the first 15–20 minutes; past an hour you are only irritating your gum.
Can you reuse a nicotine pouch?
No. After an hour the nicotine is largely gone. Bin it and take a fresh one when you want one.
Do nicotine pouches expire?
They have a best-before date about a year from manufacture. After it they are safe but drier and weaker in flavour. Opened cans are best within a month.
How many nicotine pouches a day is too many?
More than you need to stop craving. Typical use is 3–10 a day. Nausea, headaches, poor sleep or a racing heart mean too much nicotine — use fewer or a lower strength.
Can you swallow a nicotine pouch?
Do not. It is not dangerous for an adult if it happens once — the nicotine absorbs poorly through the stomach — but it can cause nausea. Keep pouches away from children, for whom swallowing one is an emergency.
