Snus in one paragraph
Snus (pronounced “snoose”) is a moist, ground tobacco product from Sweden. It is sold loose or in small portion bags, and you place it under your upper lip for 20–60 minutes rather than smoking or chewing it. Nicotine is absorbed through the gum. Unlike American dipping tobacco, snus is pasteurised rather than fermented, so it has far lower levels of the nitrosamines that make other smokeless tobacco so harmful, and you do not need to spit.
In Sweden, where around 20 % of men use it, snus has been a normal part of life for 200 years. Everywhere else in the EU, and in the UK, the sale of snus has been banned since 1992. That ban is the reason the products most people in Britain call “snus” are actually something else.
Snus vs nicotine pouches: the difference
A nicotine pouch looks like a portion of snus — a small white bag that goes under the lip — but contains no tobacco leaf. The filling is plant fibre (usually cellulose), water, flavourings, sweeteners, a pH adjuster and nicotine, which may be extracted from tobacco or made synthetically. Brands such as VELO, ZYN, Nordic Spirit, Pablo and Killa are nicotine pouches, not snus, even though stores, forums and the brands themselves often use the word “snus”.
| Snus | Nicotine pouches | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains tobacco | Yes (ground leaf) | No |
| Colour | Brown | White (“all white”) |
| Legal to sell in the UK/EU | No (except Sweden) | Yes |
| Typical nicotine per portion | 8–22 mg | 2–20 mg (up to 50+ mg in extra-strong brands) |
| Stains teeth | Can | Generally no |
| Shelf life | Short, refrigerated | Long, room temperature |
| Examples | General, Göteborgs Rapé, Ettan | VELO, ZYN, Nordic Spirit, Pablo, Siberia* |
*Siberia makes both: its classic brown “Siberia -80°C” is real snus (Sweden only); the white Siberia products sold in the UK and EU are nicotine pouches.
The experience is similar — same placement, same slow release — but pouches are drier, cleaner and available in far more flavours. Former snus users usually find a large-format pouch at 10–16 mg the closest match to a strong snus portion.
Is snus legal in the UK?
Real tobacco snus: no. The sale of snus has been banned in the UK since 1992 under tobacco product regulations, and the ban was kept after Brexit. Possessing or using it is not an offence, and travellers bring it back from Sweden, but no UK shop or website can legally sell it.
Nicotine pouches: yes. Tobacco-free pouches are legal to buy, sell and use in the UK. The Tobacco and Vapes Act introduces an age limit of 18, restrictions on advertising and, in time, limits on flavours and nicotine strength; the detailed rules are being set by regulation. For now there is no legal cap on strength, which is why 20–50 mg products from Pablo, Siberia and Killa are openly sold.
In the EU the picture varies by country. Pouches are legal in most member states; the Netherlands and Belgium have banned sales; Germany treats them as a novel food and restricts them; Sweden regulates them alongside snus. Every store on PouchHunters lists which countries it ships to on its retailer page.
How strong is snus, and how do pouches compare?
Swedish snus is usually 8 mg of nicotine per gram for regular strength and 11–22 mg/g for strong and extra strong, with a 1 g portion delivering roughly 1–2 mg of absorbed nicotine over an hour. Nicotine pouches state nicotine per pouch, which is easier to compare: 2–4 mg is light, 6–8 mg is the mainstream, 10–16 mg is strong, and anything above that is for experienced users.
The trap is brands that print mg per gram on the can: a “50 mg” Pablo is 50 mg/g and delivers around 30 mg per pouch. We explain how to read the numbers in the strength guide, and group every product by mg per pouch on the strength pages.
Is snus bad for you?
Snus is not safe, but the public-health consensus is that it is far less harmful than smoking, because nothing is burned and there is no smoke to inhale. Sweden has the lowest rate of smoking-related disease in Europe, and researchers generally attribute part of that to snus replacing cigarettes. Risks that remain include nicotine addiction, raised blood pressure and heart rate, gum recession where the portion sits, and for tobacco snus, a possible increase in some cancers (the evidence is mixed and the risk is a fraction of smoking’s).
Nicotine pouches remove the tobacco and with it most of the tobacco-specific carcinogens, but they deliver the same addictive nicotine, and high-strength pouches deliver more of it than a cigarette. Common side effects are gum irritation, hiccups and nausea at strengths that are too high. Public Health England and ASH describe pouches as likely to be substantially less harmful than smoking while not risk-free; if you do not already use nicotine, there is no health reason to start. What to buy instead of snus in the UK
If you are looking for “snus” in the UK, you will be buying nicotine pouches. Three rules make the first purchase easier:
- Start lower than you think. A 6 mg slim pouch is the standard; most people who try 12 mg+ first find it too much.
- Match the format to the feel you want. Slim is discreet, mini is nearly invisible, large feels most like a snus portion.
- Compare price per can, including shipping. The same can varies by more than a euro between stores, and 10-can bundles are usually 10–15 % cheaper. That is what PouchHunters is for: every product page shows every store’s price, multipacks and history.
The most searched brands in the UK are VELO, ZYN, Nordic Spirit and Pablo. For today’s cheapest cans across all brands, see Best price.
Frequently asked questions
What does snus do?
It delivers nicotine through the gum under your lip over 20–60 minutes, giving a stimulant effect similar to smoking but without smoke. The nicotine is addictive.
Is snus illegal in the UK?
Selling tobacco snus has been illegal in the UK since 1992. Buying, owning and using it is not an offence. Tobacco-free nicotine pouches, which most people in the UK call snus, are legal to sell and buy (18+).
Is snus the same as nicotine pouches?
No. Snus contains ground tobacco; nicotine pouches contain plant fibre and nicotine but no tobacco. They are used the same way and the brands sold as “snus” in the UK are nicotine pouches.
Is snus better than vaping?
Both are considered much less harmful than smoking. Pouches involve no inhalation and no device, and are easier to use discreetly; vaping lets you adjust nicotine more finely. Neither is risk-free, and the better choice is the one that keeps you off cigarettes.
How old do you have to be to buy snus or nicotine pouches in the UK?
18. Online stores verify age at checkout or delivery.
What is the strongest snus?
Among tobacco snus, Siberia -80°C at 43 mg/g is the best-known extra strong. Among nicotine pouches sold in the UK, Pablo, Killa, Siberia White and DENSSI go to 30–50 mg per pouch; see our strongest pouches ranking.
